Statics - Coefficient of friction?
A steel wedge is used to split a log. Wedges are designed to be self-locking, that is, so the wegde will not slip out of the log. Determine the largest angle "Q" for which the wedge is self locking If the coefficient of friction between the wedge and log is 0.3.
let the normal force be F and let x be the half angle of the wedge
The force to eject the wedge must just equal the friction force at the max angle.
F sin x= F *0.3 * cos x
tan x = 0.3
x = 16.7 degrees
Q = 2 x = 33.4 degrees
