Was the splitting maul just used as a tool in medieval times or was it also used as a weapon?

Actually, that is a rather new invention. When splitting wood, it was popped by an ax and wedges made of dogwood were inserted and they were hit with a hickory maul.
Anyway, you would not be swinging my splitter much, it weighs 9 pounds.
