what size winch should i consider for pulling logs roughly 16 inches in diameter and ten feet long.?
The logs I am pulling are still wet and i need to pull them out of some brush. I was wondering what are some good winches out there that i could mount to my truck hitch, and what size is appropriate
the wood im pulling is poplar
What you are doing does not require a winch. So if this is simply an excuse to buy a winch, go for a good Warn Winch. Makes any truck look tough!
Poplar, here in the NW we call that a weed, not a log. Wait a couple months until it is dried and you could probably lift it into your truck yourself. With one arm!
I routinely pull 30-50' sections of real trees like red-fir and Larch with a 2 WD 3/4 ton 1974 Chevy. In a pinch, I have pulled 10-15' logs with my 2 WD Nissan! (Although I folded my bumper the last time I used the Nissan).
If you have a sturdy Cat 4 hitch, just get a length of steel cable, preferably with an eye in one end and a hook on the other. Use the truck to directly pull the logs, or if a more complex, angled pull is needed, add a pulley with a heavy strap to your arsenal. Use the pulley to give the logs a straight pull in one direction while you drive in another direction. Or use the pulley to compound the pulling power. (One end of cable anchored near truck, pulley strapped to log, cable through pulley and back to truck...this doubles your pulling power)
But if you really want a winch, might as well go big:
