I am cofused please explain this.... My question is related to physics?
In splitting logs with a hammer and wedge, is a heavy hammer more effective than a
lighter hammer? Why?
The energy of the hammer does work. Let me explain a bit more. The hammer has
KE during the swing. The KE = 1/2 m v^2. So, the more massive the hammer or the
higher the velocity, the more KE it has. Since the hammer swing is largely lifting the hammer
head above your head and then letting gravity provide the velocity downward (yes, you
help a bit, but most of the velocity is provided by gravity). The velocity from gravity is
independent of mass, so v is almost always the same. That leaves increasing m as the
best way to increase energy.
When the hammer hits the wedge, this KE does work. It provides a force, F, over a distance D (the distance the wedge is driven into the log). Thus, larger KE drives the wedge a longer distance D into the log.
My oh my, physics really does understand the "real world."
