Question about Electrochem/physics and electricity?
i am doing an experiment where i am trying to light an LED using potatoes. I am using pieces of zinc and copper as the anode and cathode and I have a voltmeter to see how much voltage is being obtained. Putting a few potatoes in series I got between a range of 2-8 volts depending on the amount of potatos in series. When hooking it up to the LED however it will not light? Why is this? The package says it only needs 2.6 volts maximum and we tried it with exactly 2.6 volts. Why isnt it lighting up?
I think that you either have a bogus Voltmeter or some super duper potatoes.
Maybe you should just keep trying different LED s until you get one that works off of potatoes connected in series. Sweet potatoes work better than Irish potatoes do in an LED circuits. If Irish potatoes are used they must be fresh off the potato vine. My guess is you are using Irish potatoes from last year`s crop.
This experiment sounds like it might be part of an upper division lab exercise in advanced vegetable engineering from Berkeley university.
