Why does my car still does not want to start, after replacing car batteries?
After replacing my car batteries, my car started up fine. after several days, i ran my radio for about 30 mins without starting the car, thinking it was OK to do so, being that I just got a new battery. however, after 30 mins, I started my car again, and it does not want to start. How can this be since I just got my battery replaced? Could it be something else, perhaps spark plug or alternator?
There are many possible problems other than the battery. If you can hear the engine turn and the starter motor at it's normal speed then this is unlikely to be battery or alternator problems. If the engine turns a couple of times before going completely dead then this would indicate a problem with either the alternator or the battery. Because you have just got a new battery, it is unlikely to be that. Here are the basics:
The alternator supplies electricity to the car whilst the engine is running. If there is surplus electricity, then this is used to top up the battery. If the electricity requirements are more than the alternator can provide, the battery provides the short-fall. Thus normal daytime driving (no lights, heater etc) will top up the battery. Night time and winter driving will put more strain on the battery. This is why many batteries fail in the winter because people get up and drive to work before the sun is up so they use their lights and heaters and windscreen wipers. The car then sits at work all day and theey drive home when it has gotten dark and cold so again the battery provides the short fall. By the end of the week, the battery has no more charge left and halfway to work the electrics fail and they have to call recovery.
Thus if your new battery was not fully charged prior to installation, yo u may find that the radio has drained it. Charge it fully and try not to put any extra strain on it for the following week. The way to tell if a battery is proper dead is if you return to your car after it working fine and there is no charge at all in the battery. If there is a problem with the alternator, you will find that your car dies whilst driving because the car has used all the power in the battery and the alternator is providing nothing.
If the engine turns normally but does not fire, then this in not likely to be your battery or your alternator. Things to look for depending on the age of the vehicle and model are the spark-plugs, HT leads, distributor cap and condensor (in that order) Looking at the spark-plugs will give you an indication if they are firing or not and renew them if they are old and check the gap is as per specification.
